Busy Summer!

I feel like the summer is flying by! It’s one of those times in my life that I feel like I’m treading water and barely staying afloat. Between studying for the first part of the CPA exam, keeping Luke motivated to learn over the summer, potty training the twins, and trying to get ready to start home preschool again, I’m really overwhelmed. We travel a lot during the summer, and I’m so thankful to be able to do that. Right now it’s just a blessing and a curse. I don’t have time to get the things done that I need to, and traveling makes me feel guilty that I’m taking a break. I have less than two months to prepare for one of the hardest professional exams out there and I’m not ready. Not even close. Trying to study for 6 hours a day makes me feel guilty that the kids aren’t getting enough of my time.

This is my reality, I wouldn’t change it, it just is. I have to take these exams, I went to college and received two degrees just so I could take this test. So I could contribute to our family and give us more financial security. I don’t mind the studying, I love what I will do. I hate the guilt.

I will keep chugging along, and somehow I will get it all done. Because I have to!

Schooooool’s Out For Summer!

Every time someone says that, I sing the Alice Cooper song in my head and want to watch Dazed and Confused! Today was Luke’s last day of Kindergarten. I’ll admit that I was anxious for the school year to end, but it made me really sad today. My husband thinks I’m a lunatic for crying, but I couldn’t help it! I have a first grader now and the twins will be three this summer!

Happy first day of summer everyone!

Date Night?!

Tomorrow night my husband and I are headed into the city for a concert and leaving the littles with a sitter. For the first time ever, I’m nervous about it. No, not nervous, SCARED. And I’m not scared that something is going to happen to the kids, or that the sitter is going to be terrible. I’m terrified that my kids are going to act completely insane. I may only live 10 miles from NYC, but I can’t just jump across the Hudson and get there whenever I please. It takes at least 90 minutes, so if there are problems it won’t be pretty.

When we lived in Texas, we had plenty of date nights and there were nights that I had to be away for meetings and things. They were always well-behaved, but that was before the terrible twos kicked in. It was also before they started fighting going to bed most nights. I think that is what I’m most concerned about.

They can go from this…

To this…

In about 2.5 seconds.

Will has developed separation anxiety, which I haven’t had to deal with before. I have been trying to warm them up to the idea that a sitter will be coming and how much fun it will be. Will told me he didn’t like the sitter (He’s never met her). Not a good start. Maybe they will surprise me, let’s hope so. My husband and I haven’t gone out in over 6 months, I would like to not wait that long again!!!

In other news, potty training is going well! Woohoo!! Also, I’m pretty sure our area is the only one in the US that is still in school, and I am totally over this school year! All of my friends’ kids have been out for a while, and Luke’s last day isn’t until June 21! Is anyone else still in school?

We have a great month planned; including some really fun activities from some of my favorite blogs! Stay tuned!

Homemade Bird Feeder

I saw this fun activity on Pinterest the other day and thought the kids would love it!

We had pipe cleaners on hand and Cheerios in the pantry so we went out on the deck for some stringing fun! The twins aren’t great at beading yet, but they’re getting there!

It was great for their fine motor skills, and they really enjoyed it! We haven’t seen any birds yet, but it’s been raining since we put them out! I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Enter Sandman

We have had the play house set up in the backyard for a while, but that’s pretty much it. Between gardening and planting flowers, we have had plenty of things to do back there! I really wanted a sand box though, so yesterday we went to Target in search of one. Who knew that Target doesn’t carry them?! It’s my go to store for everything, so I didn’t even think to look online ahead of time.

Of course, I had made the mistake of telling the twins that we were getting a sand box. Not a good idea. So I bought a long flat Rubbermaid container and figured it would do for the time being. They didn’t have any sand either. I convinced them that going to get the sand after Luke got home from school was a good idea, so we waited and then went to Lowe’s. I happened to notice that they had these small plastic pools that looked similar to the round sand box I was looking for and thought “why not?”. So we bought a $12 plastic pool and 250 pounds of sand and went home. A word of advice, do not try to buy 250 pounds of sand by yourself with three kids. 50 pounds is heavy when it’s in that form!!!

I arrived home and my husband was there so I sent him out to unload. I’m pretty sure he thought I was insane for buying a random kiddie pool for a sandbox, but it ended up working fine! There is no cover, so it’ll get stuff in it, but oh well. I added some cayenne pepper to the sand to keep the bugs out and so far it has worked great!

The kids built sand castles yesterday and little dinosaurs. Will and Ella really enjoy scooping the sand into buckets, which is great for their motor skills! I bought buckets, sifters, and little things to make sand dinos out of at Target in the Dollar Spot. I spent less than $40 and they will enjoy it for the entire summer. I may need to replace the sand, but fortunately it is only $3 a bag!

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to keep the kiddos occupied while you are outside, this is great! I hope you are all enjoying your June so far!
